Small Trees for Southern California

Three Trees for Smaller Spaces

Sometimes you need a small to medium-sized tree that will complement a space without overwhelming its surroundings. Here are a few trees we keep coming back to:

1. Western Redbud, Cercis occidentalis

This tree offers pretty, sand dollar-like leaves that flutter in the wind, tiny bright pink flowers in the Spring, and strong structure and interest throughout the year.

2. Strawberry Guava, Feijoa sellowiana

The deep sage and soft white tones of the strawberry guava tree complement the California landscape well. The cheerful pink blooms with dark red stamens create a captivating contrast, often blending well with shrubs and sages.

3. Dwarf Citrus

A dwarf citrus tree is a nice addition to any plant palette, and who would not want fresh citrus on hand? Dwarf trees remain under 7’ tall, perfect for reaching for fruit and fitting into smaller spaces. Another application we recommend for these trees is planting them in pots.
