Fire Smart Landscapes

Wildfire Defense

Last month, we completed the U.S. Green Building Council’s Wildfire Defense training for landscape professionals. We learned that CA native plants are often safer due to their natural ability to retain water during the dry months.

Some native groundcovers we love for fire risk areas are the native Coyote Bush (Baccharis piluaris ‘Pigeon Point’) and California Buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum ‘Warriner Lytle’)

At Nectar, we’re also exploring ways to strategically use noncombustible materials to enhance the experience of the garden - with metal, clay and stone - to craft spaces resilient to climate change and are a joy to be in at the same time.
