Community Garden

Hugelkultur

When Studio Moonya approached us to design a community farm hub with nonprofit, Cultiva LA, it felt as though the stars had aligned to bring us all together.

The 5-acre farm in South El Monte, operated by Cultiva LA, creates space for community members, elders, and youth, to connect to the land - to teach, learn, and share in connection to nature and culture. On our community planting day, we planted a smorgasbord of plants and fruit trees.

We also crafted a Hugelmound by digging a trench and filling it with reclaimed urban forest waste (stumps from downed trees), compost, soil, mulch, and plants. Can't wait to check back in on the plants and trees and see the growth.

Thank you to all the volunteers, staff and fellows, LA County Parks, Rep. Hilda Solis, Hahamonga Nursery, AAL Materials, Bay Area Redwood, El Nativo Growers, and Devil Mountain Nursery.
